New Year’s ResolutionGET ARTSY
Since I know you resolved to get more cultured this year, what portrait do you think you’re more likely to find at that museum you’re GOING to visit?
Charita?

OR
‘Portrait of a Lady Wearing an Elaborate Hat’?

If you go to the Walters Museum in Baltimore, you’ll see them BOTH hanging beside each other as a part of the Dawoud Bey exhibit, ‘Portraits Re/Examined’ (in conjunction with the Contemporary Museum). Bey worked with students from Charm City public schools in reexamining historical (Re: WHITE) art, primarily portrait painting, in an attempt to place them alongside Bey’s own modern representations of historically neglected people, such as Charita above.
The results breathe new life into what could otherwise be alienating classics. Suddenly Charita and the lady with the nice hat can inhabit the same park AND the same museum. Love you, Walters.
