Rhinos Sexual Dysfunction ecology” />
As if poachers and deforestation weren’t enough to contend with, the incredibly rare Borneo rhino is facing extinction because of its own sexual dysfunction.
The Borneo Rhino of which only 30 to 50 remain is a subspecies of the Sumatran Rhino, the smallest and hairiest Rhino species. Scientists have discovered that the males have low sperm counts whilst many of the females suffer from uterine cysts. None have ever been successfully bread in captivity, sparking concerns that this may have serious impacts on their jungle environment.
Somewhat ironically, Rhino horn is considered an aphrodisiac in traditional Chinese medicine.
