Solidest building in Japan – Tested by earthquake, tsunami and a ship
Through magnitude 9 earthquake, tsunami of 6 meters and bearing a yacht more than 100 tons, it still stays up, this small building is known as ‘the solidest building’ in Japan.
May 10, Japan’s Iwate-ken, SDF (Self-Defense Forces) troops were removing a ship surmounting the roof of a building by cranes, which was brought by the shocking tsunami on March 11. Authority of Kamaishi City, catamaran yacht owner, said that this cruise ship will be discarded. Local residents, however, wanted to retain it as a commemoration of the unforgettable earthquake.
It began to be put into operation in 1997 and was as a cruise ship, 109 tons, mainly used in sightseeing. When the earthquake occurred, it’s in maintenance at dock and washed ashore by the tsunami.
Workers were lifting it by a crane.
