In the eastern region of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Nyiragongo volcano is one of Africa’s most famous volcanoes, there’re three overlapping stratovolcanoes including Nyiragongo (Elevation 3469 meters), Baruta (Elevation 3100 meters) and Shaheru (Elevation 2800 meters). This active volcano is one eight volcanoes in the Virunga Range in central Africa, which is also one of Africa’s most dangerous volcanoes. In the past 150 years, it has erupted 50 times. violent and devastating eruptions occurred in 1948, 1972, 1975, 1977, 1986 and 2002, among which, the eruption in January 1977 caused a total of about 2,000 deaths in half an hour. Nyiragongo Crater diameter of 2000 meters, 244 meters deep, at the bottom of it, there’s the world’s largest lava lake.
June 2010, a team of scientists and brave explorers approached the boiling lava lake in the heart of Nyiragongo Crater. Team members had been very impressed in their childhood by the documentary "The Devil’s Blast" by Haroun Tazieff in 1960 and dreamed of walking on the shores of this stunning and awe-inspiring lava lake. Photographer Olivier Grunewald was within only one meter of the lava lake which is as fearful as hell to record these unique awesome scenes.
Here, may I sincerely pay my tribute to all of them. :)
